Chapter 6 - The Whispering Gallery

The humiliation was no longer a private domestic dispute; it had transformed into a public execution.
On the terrace above, the whispers began—low, venomous, and spreading through the crowd of seventy guests like wildfire through dry brush. Men who had clinked glasses with Brandon ten minutes earlier took subtle, synchronized steps backward toward the foyer, checking their watches, signaling their private drivers on their smartphones, desperate to disentangle their names and reputations from the impending financial ruin of Brandon Prescott.
"I told you the terminal deal was leveraged," one shipping magnate muttered behind a linen napkin to an investment banker. "He didn't have the equity. He was floating the entire acquisition on her family's balance sheet."
"And the house..." a woman in diamonds whispered, her eyes wide with malicious delight. "It’s hers. It was always hers. He brought us out here to celebrate an eviction."
The cruel, muffled laughter of his peers drifted down the red carpet, striking Brandon’s ears with the force of physical blows. His face burned with a humiliating, feverish heat, his tailored tuxedo feeling like an iron straightjacket against his sweating skin. He looked at the uniformed attendant standing by the entrance, but the young man deliberately avoided his gaze, looking straight ahead into the palms as though Brandon had already ceased to exist.
Brooke reached the bottom tier of the stairs, clutching the sleeping infant against her chest, her dramatic crimson gown stained with dust from the stone steps. Her carefully coiffed blonde waves were coming undone in the humid breeze, sticking to her damp, tear-streaked cheeks.
"You swore to me," Brooke wept, her voice cracked with despair, reaching out to grab Brandon’s shoulder with her free hand, shaking him. "You swore the lawyers had cleared everything! You told me Charlotte was broke! You told me she was living off scraps in Georgia!"
Brandon shrugged her hand off with a violent, frantic jerk of his shoulder, not out of malice toward the girl, but out of sheer, unadulterated panic.
"Shut up, Brooke!" Brandon snarled under his breath, his voice trembling with a frantic, desperate rage. "Just shut your mouth for one second! Let me think!"
"Don't you tell me to shut up!" Brooke shrieked, the veneer of high-society elegance completely evaporating into the raw, screeching fury of a betrayed mistress. "You paraded me out here in front of these people! You put my daughter in this dress! You made me look like a fool!"
Charlotte stood completely motionless, watching the two of them turn on each other with the clinical detachment of a scientist observing specimens under glass.
She did not intervene. She did not raise her voice to gloat. She simply watched the natural, inevitable decay of a relationship built on greed, vanity, and stolen assets. When a house is built on a foundation of sand, one does not need a battering ram to bring it down; one merely needs to wait for the tide to come in.
"If you're finished performing for the neighborhood, Brandon," Charlotte spoke, her quiet voice instantly cutting through their hysterical bickering, "there is one more matter that requires your attention before the recovery trucks enter the gates."
Brandon turned back to face her, his chest heaving, his bowtie crooked, his eyes wild with a terrifying mixture of hatred and dread.
"What else could you possibly want, Charlotte?" he choked out. "You've taken the house! You've taken the car! You've humiliated me in front of everyone I know! What else is there?"
May you like
Charlotte did not answer immediately.
With slow, deliberate grace, she lowered the cream-colored ownership documents, resting them against her hip. She reached down with her gloved right hand and unclasped the polished gold latch of her black leather Hermès bag.
