Chapter 7 - THE OTHER MERCER FILES

Detective Hall found Marcus Redd’s apartment empty but not abandoned. Clothes remained in the closet, food sat in the freezer, and his landlord said Redd left with one duffel bag two days after Daniel’s crash. Hall issued a statewide alert while Elena turned back to the old records.
The burglary had convinced her that somebody believed Daniel hid more than the suitcase. The question was what.
Nora Finch remembered that Robert Mercer kept duplicate corporate books at the old warehouse on County Road 14. Those records were never part of ordinary audits because Robert considered them “family working papers.” After his death, Simon took responsibility for sorting the archive.
Daniel’s notebook suggested Simon moved boxes from the warehouse shortly before the crash.
Elena, Hall, and a court-appointed investigator went there under a preservation order. Most shelves were empty. Dust outlines showed where storage cartons had recently been removed.
One metal cabinet remained locked.
Inside were insurance schedules, old payroll ledgers, and a set of handwritten notes made by Robert. Several entries referred to “reserve recovery” after the retaining-wall collapse. Payments intended for worker claims were described as “idle capital.”
Elena felt nauseated reading the phrase.
Robert had not viewed the restitution money as money belonging to injured families. He had viewed it as capital temporarily trapped by legal obligations.
Simon’s initials appeared beside several reinvestment plans.
The scheme began before Daniel and Ray inherited anything.
That discovery expanded the story beyond a recent power grab. Simon had helped Robert design the original diversion years earlier. Daniel and Ray later signed documents that kept it alive, but they inherited a system already functioning.
Elena found another file containing board minutes from eighteen months earlier. Simon proposed selling Mercer Development to Halcyon Partners, a private-equity group. Daniel objected because Halcyon intended to liquidate several properties and terminate the company’s old liabilities through restructuring.
One line was underlined in Daniel’s handwriting:
SALE ERASES THE CLAIM TRAIL.
Daniel believed the acquisition was not simply profitable.
It was designed to bury evidence.
Ray admitted he initially supported the sale. He wanted out of the company and believed a clean transaction would allow everyone to move on. Daniel accused him of choosing money over the families their father cheated.
The brothers’ relationship deteriorated badly.
That explained some of Daniel’s warning about Ray without making Ray the mastermind. Ray was compromised in multiple ways: he signed false payments, destroyed evidence, and supported a sale that could bury the scheme.
He had reasons to fear the suitcase.
He also had reasons to fear Simon.
Then Hall recovered an old text exchange between Daniel and Ray from a backup Daniel stored outside the company system. It began six weeks before the crash.
DANIEL: I FOUND WHERE VALE MOVED THE REST.
RAY: DROP IT.
DANIEL: THERE ARE FAMILIES WHO NEVER GOT PAID.
RAY: WE SIGNED TOO. YOU EXPOSE HIM, WE GO WITH HIM.
DANIEL: MAYBE WE SHOULD.
Two days later, Ray wrote something different.
SHOW ME.
That was the first indication that Ray’s position had changed before Daniel died.
Elena kept reading. Over the following weeks, the brothers exchanged short messages about bank records, old warehouse boxes, and Simon’s schedule. They appeared to be investigating together.
Then, eleven days before the crash, Daniel wrote:
IF I GO DOWN, YOU DO NOT TOUCH THE CASE. YOU PANIC WHEN HE THREATENS YOU.
Ray replied:
FAIR.
Elena finally understood Daniel’s instruction.
Don’t let Ray touch this was not proof that Daniel thought Ray killed him.
It was proof that Daniel knew Ray could be frightened into destroying evidence.
The final text between the brothers was sent twenty-one hours before the crash.
DANIEL: I HAVE ENOUGH. TOMORROW WE GO OUTSIDE THE COMPANY.
RAY: TO WHO?
DANIEL: I’LL TELL YOU WHEN YOU GET THERE.
May you like
Ray never received the location.
Daniel died first.
