Chapter 5 - The Shadow in the Background

Dominic took a single, quiet step forward. The soaked wool of his jacket made no sound as he closed the distance between them.
He reached out his right hand, open and steady, and gently took the photograph from Vivienne’s paralyzed fingers. She did not resist. Her hand simply dropped to her side like dead weight as he withdrew the card.
Dominic did not look at the back. He had no need to read the words; he had memorized the original document before the ink had dried twenty-four years ago.
Instead, he turned the photograph back over to the front image.
He brought it up beneath the warm light of the Bohemian chandelier, studying the faded print of his younger self standing beside Julian. A faint, nostalgic shadow touched his eyes—a remembrance of a brotherhood and a dynasty forged in iron and blood.
Then, Dominic’s gaze shifted.
His dark eyes drifted away from the center of the frame, moving toward the background. There, standing half-obscured by the heavy velvet drapes of the old terrace, several steps behind his younger self and Julian, stood a third figure.
The man in the background was dressed in a tailored chauffeur’s uniform, holding an overcoat over his arm, standing in deep shadow. His face was turned slightly away from the camera lens, yet the profile, the posture of subservient calculation, and the distinctive gold signet ring on his pinky finger were unmistakable.
Dominic’s expression hardened.
The calm detachment that had shielded his features since entering the ballroom shifted into something far darker, older, and colder. It was the face of an inquisitor who had finally located the missing ledger.
He recognized the ring. He recognized the slant of the shoulders.
Dominic stared at the background figure for ten long seconds, the silence in the ballroom thickening until it felt like an iron weight pressing down on the chests of everyone present. He lowered his thumb, framing the obscured figure between his calloused fingers.
A slow, deliberate breath escaped his chest.
"Arthur," Dominic said quietly, without looking at the manager.
"Yes, Mr. Valerio?" Campbell responded instantly, taking half a step forward.
"The registry records for nineteen-ninety-nine through two-thousand-and-two," Dominic stated evenly. "The private logbooks from the founder’s personal office. They are still in the safe behind the mahogany paneling in the vault?"

"Intact and sealed under your private signet, sir," Campbell replied, his voice firm and unwavering. "No one has been permitted access. Not the board. Not the city inspectors. No one."
Dominic nodded slowly. "Good."
