Chapter 12 - THE LEAK WAS NOT ONE PERSON

The independent review lasted six weeks.

It did not produce the satisfying chart Evelyn wanted.

It produced a mess.

Nolan Price leaked one protected fact to a defense contractor while maintaining an undisclosed financial relationship.

Serious.

Grant Hale leaked Arthur’s security information to Margaret.

Serious.

Peter Doss hired Kestrel to obtain physical evidence information using aggressive language he later claimed he never expected to become theft.

Serious.

Kestrel passed the job to Sloane.

Sloane decided to grab the bag.

Criminal.

Margaret independently planted the bracelet.

Criminal exposure of her own.

Evelyn approved private security sharing of movement windows.

Questionable but documented.

Nolan attached too much to the shared packet.

Careless.

The Public Integrity Bureau’s camera archive exported stills too broadly.

Bad control.

Mara’s old session token remained active after card removal.

Bad system.

No mastermind.

No single person standing behind all of it.

That was almost disappointing.

Then one finding helped Price slightly.

The exact route:

West courthouse exit.

Plaza.

Had not come from him.

It came from Grant’s security packet.

Sloane obtained it through Kestrel after a Northbank employee purchased a corporate-risk data package from an information broker that had scraped Vale Protective’s exposed calendar endpoint.

The security portal had been misconfigured.

Authenticated link.

But shareable once copied.

Grant never intended Sloane to see it.

He had created the condition.

Arthur had hired the system.

Evelyn had approved limited sharing.

Nolan added the wrong attachment.

Everyone had one hand near the failure.

Not equal hands.

Then Doss’s conduct was reviewed by defense counsel.

The law firm produced instructions saying:

No contact with prosecutors.

No taking physical property.

No deception involving evidence.

Doss had exceeded them.

The firm fired him and self-reported to the court.

Evelyn wanted to believe that cleared the defense team.

Mara corrected her.

“It means evidence currently supports Doss acting outside instructions.”

Correct.

Not moral certificates.

Then the Briar drive itself was rehashed.

Checksum matched the original.

Seal history intact.

No access.

Defense withdrew the argument that the contents had been altered.

They kept the argument about transport weakness.

The judge denied suppression.

Harbor Point survived.

Without Evelyn.

That hurt.

Then Nolan Price’s case shifted from dramatic espionage to something more familiar.

Official misconduct.

Unauthorized disclosure.

Policy violations.

Possible obstruction depending on intent and local statutes.

His lawyer argued he never intended Sloane to steal anything.

The evidence supported that possibility.

It did not excuse giving protected information to Doss.

Grant Hale was terminated from Vale Protective.

Arthur sued for breach of fiduciary and confidentiality obligations.

Margaret offered to testify about the information Grant sent her.

That gave prosecutors leverage.

Then one item complicated Margaret’s motive too.

Thomas Vale’s lawyers voluntarily turned over internal emails.

Thomas had not known about Margaret’s plan.

When he learned, he wrote:

You made me look guilty trying to protect me. Stop. Do not contact anyone about Evelyn Carter again.

Margaret obeyed him.

For once.

The investigation into Thomas’s Briar approvals continued.

No charge yet.

No promise.

Then Arthur came to Mara with a request.

He wanted Evelyn returned to Harbor Point.

Mara refused to promise.

Arthur said:

“She knows the case.”

Mara answered:

“She is now a witness in part of it.”

Arthur:

“Then wall that part.”

Mara:

“That is not your decision.”

Arthur did not like hearing his own kind of sentence.

Good.
