Chapter 6 - Ankle Lock and Angular Velocity

She did not flinch. She did not attempt to leap backward, which would have left her heel trailing into the direct path of the strike. Instead of fighting the kinetic reality of the incoming boot, Avery leaned directly into the geometry of the attack.

At the exact microsecond the sole of Briggs’s boot reached a point six inches from the lateral plane of her knee, Avery dropped her center of gravity straight down toward the deck. Her hips dropped not through a slow, muscular bend, but with the instantaneous, dropping release of an elevator cable being severed.

Her left leg, the target of his malice, snapped inward at an acute, defensive angle, withdrawing the knee from the impact zone while leaving the space open for his momentum to continue its downward descent. At the same time, her torso dropped beneath the horizontal plane of his striking leg.

Her right arm whipped across her body in a tight, kinetic arc. Her forearm—hard as iron from years of structural conditioning—slid under the Achilles tendon of Briggs’s descending leg like a steel wedge, while her left hand clamped over the top of his heavy leather laces with the crushing force of a vise.

She caught the boot.

She did not catch it through brute strength; she caught it by matching its downward velocity, sliding her grip along the vector of his kick, and arresting its forward progress at the precise inflection point where his leg was at full, locked extension.

The sound was not a wet impact, but a sharp, clean *clack* of bone meeting leather and muscle, a sound that cut through the arena like the cocking of a rifle bolt.

The entire crowd gasped. It was not a scattered, individual reaction, but a single, massive intake of air from five hundred throats that drained the oxygen from the training basin. The soldiers leaning over the rails froze in place; the junior officers on the eastern stands stood up as one body; the smartphones remained locked in mid-air, their operators stunned into paralysis.

Briggs’s face did not merely register surprise; it underwent a total, terrifying collapse. The triumphant, malicious sneer melted away in an instant, replaced by a wide-eyed, hollow shock as his balance simply evaporated from beneath his hips.

He was suspended on one foot, his massive frame completely committed to a downward stomp that had struck nothing but empty air, and now, his dominant leg was held in the unbreakable, two-handed grip of a woman who had dropped her hips beneath his own, anchoring herself to the combat mat like a concrete bollard.

He was completely helpless. His center of gravity was no longer over his base of support; it was floating in the empty air between them, tethered only to the ankle she controlled with mathematical precision.

Avery’s face remained totally, terrifyingly calm. Her breathing did not hitch. Her hands did not tremble under the massive, dead weight of his leg. One hand locked his ankle tight against her ribs; the other stabilized her base against the high-density vinyl of the mat.

She looked up at him through her lashes, her eyes cold, flat, and empty of all sport.

"You're done," she did not say the words aloud, but the silence between them screamed it with absolute finality.
