Chapter 6 - THE VOICE FROM THE PAST

For three agonizing seconds, the radio channel fell into complete, dead silence. The background hum of jet engines on the speaker smoothed out into a steady, powerful roar.

Then, the pilot’s voice came back through the operations room speakers. The raw, screaming panic that had filled his voice moments ago was gone, replaced by a quiet, trembling tone of utter shock.

"Wait..." Viper One-One whispered over the open frequency, his breath hitching. "...I know that voice."

The Incoming Commander’s fingers froze very slightly over the mechanical keyboard. Her calm face didn't break, but her dark eyes narrowed slightly as she stared at the green track.

Behind her, Nash’s hands slowly slipped away from the collar of her black fleece. As his fingers pulled back the heavy fabric near her neckline, the front zipper shifted slightly to the side.

For a brief, fleeting second, the edge of an embroidered rank insignia—hidden beneath the dark fleece—was exposed under the harsh console lights. The camera angle remained tight, catching the metallic sheen of a high-tier command badge, but keeping the specific star or eagle pattern obscured from clear view.

Nash’s breath caught in his throat as he caught a glimpse of the hidden insignia. His face turned ghost-white.

Over the speaker, the pilot continued, his voice echoing through the silent operations room with profound reverence:

"Ma’am... is that really you?"

The entire Air Force operations floor fell into absolute, suffocating silence. No one moved. No one spoke. Every eye in the subterranean complex was locked onto the woman sitting in the combat chair.

The Incoming Commander did not answer the pilot's question. She didn't confirm her identity, nor did she acknowledge the stunned silence surrounding her.

She simply pressed the push-to-talk button one last time, her voice steady and unyielding.

"Viper One-One, maintain heading zero-four-zero until cleared. You are home."
