Chapter 10 - INTO THE SHIMMER

Only Admiral Kane, Range Master Ellis, and Claire Morgan remained under the long corrugated metal roof of the firing range.

The heat shimmer outside the shelter seemed to intensify, blurring the distant mountains into jagged, shifting silhouettes against the pale blue sky. The smell of burned gunpowder hung thick in the air between them.

Kane turned back to Claire, his shoulders sagging slightly beneath his gold-embroidered epaulets.

"Eight o'clock tonight," Kane said, his voice barely audible over the desert wind. "The south gate office. I'll have the hard copy."

Claire nodded once. "Thank you, Admiral."

She picked up her rifle case with her left hand, her movement smooth and balanced. As she lifted the heavy case, her sleeve pulled tight across her arm once more, the faint, black geometric circle outlining itself briefly against the fabric before settling flat.

She turned on her heel and began walking down the concrete aisle away from the firing line.

Her boots made quiet, rhythmic thuds against the pad, unhurried and steady. She walked past the empty firing stalls, past the range control office, and stepped out from under the metal roof into the blinding, open sunlight of the Southwestern desert.

Admiral Kane stood at the edge of the firing bench, watching her figure shrink against the vast expanse of sand and heat.

Range Master Ellis walked up slowly, stopping beside the Admiral. He looked down at the five smoking brass casings resting on the concrete pad near their boots, then looked out toward the distant steel target where five bullets had struck within a two-inch circle at eight hundred meters.

"Who is she, sir?" Ellis asked quietly, his voice filled with a old veteran's quiet awe.

Admiral Kane slowly lifted his white officer's cap, wiping a bead of cold sweat from his graying forehead before placing it back on his head. He did not look at Ellis. He kept his eyes locked on the disappearing figure walking across the sun-blasted tarmac.

"She's a ghost, Ellis," Kane whispered, his voice trembling in the heat. "And God help us all if she doesn't get what she came for."

Claire reached the outer perimeter gate, pushed the steel turnstile open, and vanished into the shimmering desert heat, leaving the firing range behind in absolute, unbroken silence.
