Chapter 10 - The Standing Legend

Tara didn't celebrate. She didn't raise her arms, nor did she look up at the giant scoreboard displaying her record-breaking triumph.

With the same calm, disciplined composure she had shown all day, she cleared her rifle chamber, verified it was empty, and safely placed the weapon back inside her weathered olive-drab case. She zipped up her small accessory bag, picked up her case by the tape-reinforced handle, and stood up.

As she stepped off the concrete firing pad, the crowd parted for her automatically, making a wide path through the center aisle. Marine Shooter Calloway came to attention as she passed, offering her a crisp, respectful military salute. Tara offered a subtle, polite nod in return.

She walked up the wooden steps toward the scoring tent to collect her official verification papers.

Rear Admiral Crawford stood at the top of the ramp, his face pale, his hands trembling slightly behind his back. As Tara approached, he tried to regain his composure, stepping forward to speak.

"Master Sergeant Wells..." Crawford started, his voice lacking all its former authority. "I... I was not aware of the full context of your service record."

Tara stopped three feet from him. She didn't look at his ribbons, nor did she look at his admiral's stars. She looked him straight in the eyes with a calm, penetrating clarity that made Crawford instinctively take half a step back.

"It doesn't matter, Admiral," Tara said softly, her voice carrying over the quieted crowd. "The target doesn't care about your rank. And neither does the wind."

She turned to the Senior Official, who handed her the official $300,000 championship certificate with two hands, bowing his head slightly in quiet reverence.

"Thank you, Master Sergeant," the Senior Official said quietly. "For everything."

Tara tucked the certificate into her cargo pocket, picked up her battered twenty-year-old rifle case, and walked past the cameras, past the cheering crowd, and down the long dusty road toward the base exit, her silhouette framed by the brilliant California sun.

Behind her, the mystery of the woman from Lane Twelve remained untouched—a retired Master Sergeant who carried the weight of a classified legend inside a tape-wrapped case, leaving an entire military base staring after her in silent awe.
