Chapter 4 - THE TAPE BEGINS

The tension in the diner had stretched so tight it felt as though a single loud noise would shatter the glass windows.

Mason was the first to break the silence. He leaned forward, placing his thick forearms on the table, his brow heavy with worry.

“Wade...” Mason said softly, his voice low and cautious. “Wade, man... what is that? What did she write?”

Wade didn't answer him. He didn't even acknowledge that Mason had spoken. His gray eyes remained fixed on the men around him, assessing every subtle shift in posture, every flick of an eye, every breath taken by the brothers he had trusted with his life.

Emma moved closer to Wade’s side. The oversized vest rustled against her legs. She reached into the left pocket of her yellow dress and pulled out the last item she carried: a small, dark gray voice recorder. It was an older analog model, rectangular and compact, its plastic casing scratched from years of storage. A tiny red light near the top was dark, waiting.

She looked up at Wade, her small face solemn.

“Mom said you had to hear this beside me,” Emma said quietly. “She said you wouldn't believe the letter unless I was standing right here when you played it.”

Wade looked down at her. The burning fury in his eyes softened for a fraction of a second, replaced by a dark, protective instinct that made his posture broaden. He slowly sank back down into the red vinyl booth, his heavy frame settling with a groan of springs. He didn't let go of the letter; he folded it once and tucked it inside the breast pocket of his own black leather cut, right over his heart.

“Put it on the table, Emma,” Wade said gently.

Emma lifted her arm and placed the tiny voice recorder right in the middle of the laminate surface, directly between Wade’s hands and the salt shaker.

The eyes of every biker at the table locked onto the small gray box. Ray, still sitting at the far end by the window, shifted his weight slightly, his leather vest leaning against the glass panel behind him.

Emma reached out with a single, slender finger. She pressed the black PLAY button at the top of the recorder.

A loud CLICK echoed through the diner.

The tiny red LED light on the top corner of the device burst into a solid, bright crimson glow.

For a second, there was only the high, static hiss of old magnetic tape spinning over a playback head—a quiet hiss-shhh-hiss that filled the silence of the room.

Then, a voice came through the tiny, tinny speaker on the back of the recorder.

It was faint, raspy, and weak, breathing heavily through a filter of static, but to Wade, it was as distinct as thunder.

“Wade...”

The sound of Sarah’s voice hit the table like an electric shock. Wade’s hand twitched on the table.

“Wade... if you’re listening to this... it means she found you...”

The tape hissed loudly. In the background of the recording, beneath Sarah’s labored breathing, there was another sound—a faint, metallic clinking, followed by the dull, rhythmic thrum of an engine idling in the distance.

Then, Sarah’s voice came back, but as she began to speak the crucial words—the names, the dates, the truth of what had happened two weeks ago—the ambient noise of the diner suddenly swelled.

The heavy commercial refrigerator unit in the corner kicked on with a violent, rumbling hum. A truck driver at the counter dropped a stack of heavy ceramic plates into a bus tub with a deafening crash of thick china. The waitress turned on the industrial sink, spraying high-pressure water against metal pans.

The audience heard only fragment of Sarah's voice beneath the drown of diner noise:

“...never meant to keep her... but they came... Wade, it was... he was the one who... thirty years ago... inside the club...”

The rest of her words became completely indistinct, swallowed whole by the mechanical clatter of the diner.

Wade didn't miss a single syllable.

He leaned his head down until his ear was inches from the tiny plastic speaker. His broad back went completely rigid. Every muscle in his massive neck strained against his skin, the dark raven tattoo stretching tight. His knuckles turned pure white as he clamped his hands onto the edge of the table so hard the wood groaned.

His eyes widened in sheer, unadulterated horror.
