Chapter 12 - THE PHOTOGRAPH WASN'T TAKEN BY NORA

Evelyn had assumed Nora took the Polaroid.
She hadn't.
That mattered because someone had been standing with Adrian outside the funeral home.
Grant Bell remembered more after detectives showed him the image.
The camera belonged to the funeral home.
An old instant camera used occasionally for floral placement records and pre-need cataloging.
Adrian asked for a photograph proving he had personally delivered the preservation directive.
Grant thought it was eccentric.
He agreed.
But Grant did not take it.
He had been called inside.
Another visitor did.
“Who?”
Evelyn asked.
Grant looked embarrassed.
“I don't know.”
Evelyn stared.
“You handed your camera to a stranger?”
“To a man standing outside with Mr. Hart.”
That changed everything.
“What man?”
“Gray coat. About Adrian's age.”
“Julian?”
Grant shook his head.
“I know Julian.”
“Then who?”
“I didn't ask.”
The exterior camera had been replaced two days later during scheduled maintenance.
Old footage overwritten.
Not conspiracy.
Terrible timing.
The Polaroid only showed Adrian because the other man stood behind the camera.
Nora had not known this either.
Then detectives found the appointment log.
Adrian's meeting was listed at 3:40.
At 4:12, another visitor signed in.
Name:
Michael Vale.
Evelyn frowned.
She knew no Michael Vale.
Neither did Nora.
Julian did.
His face changed when detectives asked.
Michael Vale was not a Vale.
The name was an alias.
Used years earlier by Conrad Hart's personal investigator.
Real name:
Michael Quinn.
Nora stared when she heard it.
“Quinn?”
Her mother's surname.
Michael Quinn was Celeste's older brother.
Nora's uncle.
He disappeared from the family in 2001.
Nora had been told he moved to Arizona after a fight with Celeste.
He died in 2020.
At least according to the family story.
No death certificate appeared in Arizona.
No obituary.
No probate.
Nora called her aunt.
Then an old cousin.
Nobody had actually seen proof Michael died.
They had simply stopped hearing from him.
Evelyn looked at Nora.
“Could he still be alive?”
“I don't know.”
“Was Adrian looking for him?”
Nora checked the research drive.
One folder:
M. QUINN
Mostly empty.
One PDF.
A letter Adrian sent six weeks earlier to a post-office box in Vermont.
Michael, if you are alive, I know what my father did to Celeste. I am not asking you to forgive anyone. I need to know what happened after Nora was born.
No response in the file.
But four days before Adrian died, someone signed into the funeral home as Michael Vale.
The name looked like a joke only two people would understand.
Quinn using Vale.
Outside one family's name.
Inside another's.
Then Evelyn asked Grant:
“Did the man go inside with Adrian?”
“No.”
“Did he leave with him?”
“I don't know.”
“Did Adrian seem afraid?”
Grant thought.
“No.”
“Angry?”
“No.”
“What?”
Grant looked at the Polaroid.
“Relieved.”
The mystery had shifted again.
Adrian did not visit the funeral home only to protect his body after death.
May you like
He may have used it as a meeting place.
And the person he met had been connected to Nora long before Nora ever found Adrian.
