Chapter 5 - ARTHUR’S CONFESSION

Arthur looked at the will in my hands.

Then at my face.

For one terrible second, I thought he would call for Julian.

Instead, he closed the door behind him.

“You found it.”

My voice shook.

“You wanted me to?”

He nodded.

“I couldn’t hand it to you where they could see.”

“The man on the bus.”

“Henry Whitaker. My old attorney.”

“The man Nathan trusted?”

Arthur’s face twisted.

“Yes.”

I held up the photograph.

“Why is my son in this picture?”

Arthur lowered himself into a chair like the truth had weight.

“Nathan came home after Leo was born.”

“No.”

“He did.”

I wanted to reject it.

Nathan had told me he never wanted that house near our child.

“He came because he discovered Julian had been moving assets through shell companies. He wanted his shares locked away for Leo, outside the family office.”

My grip tightened around the paper.

“He never told me.”

“He wanted to finish it first.”

Arthur looked toward the door.

“He brought Leo here once while you were recovering. He said you didn’t know because he didn’t want you frightened until the documents were filed.”

My chest hurt.

“Nathan would have told me.”

“He planned to.”

Silence stretched between us.

Then Arthur said the sentence that made everything colder.

“He died three days later.”

The room seemed to tilt.

“Are you saying Julian—”

“I’m saying Nathan had enemies in this house.”

Arthur’s voice broke.

“I’m saying I was a coward. I let Martha convince me that bringing you in would cause scandal. I let Julian tell me the documents were incomplete. I let years pass.”

“You knew about Leo.”

“Yes.”

“And you left us alone.”

His eyes filled.

“Yes.”

I wanted to hate him.

Part of me did.

But I also saw an old man trapped inside the consequences of every silence he had chosen.

“What does Julian need me to sign?”

Arthur reached for the folder on the table.

“A transfer of guardian voting authority.”

“To him?”

“To the family office. Which means him.”

“And if I sign?”

“Leo loses practical control of the shares until he’s twenty-five. Julian can leverage them, borrow against them, vote them, and bury what Nathan tried to expose.”

I looked down at the will.

“How much does Leo own?”

Arthur swallowed.

“With Nathan’s shares and the portion I assigned before Martha stopped me…”

He looked toward the old photograph.

“Control.”
