Chapter 6 - THE SILENT BETRAYAL

The atmosphere inside the VIP mezzanine vanished into a suffocating, lethal quiet. The soft jazz music playing from the ceiling speakers seemed to fade out entirely, replaced by the heavy, ominous ticking of the clock behind the bar.

Dominic leaned back into his dark leather bench, his broad frame casting a long shadow across the white linen tablecloth. His right hand rested flat on the wood, his knuckles pale.

"Who?" Dominic asked, his voice dropping so low it was almost a hum in the floorboards.

Marco leaned down even closer, placing his lips two inches from Dominic’s ear. He uttered a single name—a sharp, three-syllable name belonging to one of the most powerful, trusted lieutenants in the Moretti crime family.

Dominic’s expression changed instantly.

The calm, controlled demeanor he had maintained all evening shattered, replaced by a cold, monstrous fury that sent a violent chill through the entire room. His eyes didn't widen; they narrowed into two slits of dark, liquid fire.

Slowly, deliberately, Dominic turned his head away from Marco and looked past Emily, staring out across the grand dining room on the lower floor of the restaurant.

Standing beside the main archway leading to the bar, thirty yards away, stood one of Dominic’s own men—a well-dressed lieutenant in an expensive coat, holding a glass of bourbon, casually observing the VIP mezzanine from a distance. The dim restaurant lighting kept his face partially obscured, but his presence was unmistakable.

He wasn't guarding the restaurant. He was watching the table.

Emily noticed Dominic’s sudden, terrifying shift in focus. She pulled baby Noah tighter into her arms, her small shoulders shrinking as if trying to make herself invisible in the giant leather chair.

Dominic slowly brought his gaze back to Emily. His voice, when he spoke, was remarkably soft, carrying a quiet, protective weight that contrasted sharply with the lethal anger radiating from his body.

"Emily..." Dominic asked quietly. "How long has he known about you?"
