Chapter 10 - THE NEW SANCTUARY

Two weeks later.
The midsummer sun was setting over the Hudson River, casting a brilliant, golden amber light across the private estate grounds of the Moretti compound in Alpine, New Jersey.
The compound was a fortress—surrounded by high stone walls, gated security checkpoints, and state-of-the-art medical facilities built into the private guest wing.
Inside the spacious, sunlit master bedroom of the guest wing, Elena Russo lay propped up against plush silk pillows on a massive king-sized bed. Her skin was no longer pale; a healthy, warm color had returned to her cheeks, and an IV drip delivered top-tier, specialized medical treatments coordinated by the best autoimmune specialists in the country. She looked out the large floor-to-ceiling windows at the green gardens below, a quiet, peaceful smile on her lips.
Down on the manicured green lawn below the terrace, six-year-old Sophie was running through the grass, wearing a bright new pink sundress, laughing as she chased a golden retriever puppy across the lawn.
Standing on the edge of the stone terrace, watching his daughter play, was Vincent Moretti.
He wore a clean white dress shirt with the sleeves rolled up to his forearms, his dark suit jacket draped over the terrace railing. The cold, paranoid darkness that had governed his eyes for seven years was gone, replaced by a deep, unshakeable sense of purpose.
Marco walked up beside him, holding a leather portfolio containing the finalized legal name-change documents and private trust trust funds for Sophie Moretti.
"The perimeter security is fully locked down, Boss," Marco reported quietly, looking out at the young girl playing in the sunlight. "The doctors say Elena's response to the new therapy is better than expected. She'll be ambulatory by next month."
Vincent nodded slowly, taking a slow, deep breath of the cool evening air.
"And the family captains?" Vincent asked softly.
"They know," Marco answered, a proud smile touching his lips. "Every crew leader from Brooklyn to the Bronx has been informed. They know that if anyone even speaks her name without respect, you will tear their empire down to the ground."
Vincent didn't answer. He didn't need to.
Down on the grass, little Sophie caught sight of her father standing on the terrace above.
She stopped running, picked up her golden retriever puppy in her small arms, and waved her free hand frantically toward the terrace, her small voice carrying happily over the quiet grounds:
"Daddy! Look! He caught the ball!"
Vincent looked down at his daughter—the brave little girl who had walked up to him on a hot Manhattan sidewalk, pulled out an old prepaid phone, and saved her father's life.

A genuine, warm smile broke across Vincent Moretti's face—a smile that illuminated his hard features with a light no one in New York had seen in seven years.
He raised his hand and waved back to his daughter, ready to spend the rest of his life protecting the little girl who had given him everything.
