Chapter 9 - THE ICU CORRIDOR

The emergency waiting area at Flagstaff Medical Center smelled strongly of floor disinfectant and industrial coffee. The overhead fluorescent lights hummed with a faint, irritating vibration, casting a cold, harsh light over the vinyl waiting chairs.
Cal was behind the double steel doors of Trauma Room Two. A team of attending physicians and neurological specialists had been working on him for over forty minutes, but no medical staff had come out to provide an update.
Outside in the corridor, four members of Cal’s motorcycle club stood guard. They were broad, heavily built men wearing leather vests, their presence casting an intimidating shadow across the hallway that made passing nurses walk with hurried steps.
Mack stood near the glass doors, pacing back and forth with aggressive energy.
Erin sat on a low vinyl couch near the corner, holding June across her lap. Exhaustion had finally overtaken the little girl; her head rested against Erin’s shoulder, her soft breathing rhythmic as she slept. Her small fingers remained tightly hooked into the fabric of Erin’s burgundy apron.
The double steel doors swung open, and an attending doctor in surgical scrubs stepped out, pulling down his mask.
Mack instantly charged forward, stopping inches from the doctor. "What's his status?!"
The doctor remained calm, though his expression was serious. "We’ve stabilized his vital functions for the moment, but his system is in severe distress. This wasn't a stroke or a heart attack. His nervous system is suffering acute failure due to an unidentified neurotoxin in his bloodstream."
The hallway went dead silent.
"Toxin?" Mack rasped, his voice dropping into a dangerous register. "You saying somebody poisoned him?"
"We are running urgent toxicology screens right now," the doctor explained quickly. "It’s a fast-acting substance that targets motor control before causing systemic respiratory shutdown. If he hadn't reached the emergency bay when he did, his lungs would have stopped functioning entirely within ten minutes."
Erin’s blood ran cold.

Poison.
The untouched burger. The spilled coffee. The trembling hands. Cal hadn't been suffering from an sudden illness—he had been targeted. Someone had introduced a deadly substance into his system before he ever sat down at Table Four.
