Chapter 12 - THE BLACK CAPSULE FROM SIX YEARS AGO

Graham’s confession solved the current glass.

It did not solve Evelyn.

Detective Ortiz was careful about that.

“The current capsule does not prove anything about your mother’s death.”

Victoria nodded.

Then kept asking questions anyway.

Fair.

Graham said the black-shell idea came from memory.

Not from preserved evidence.

He remembered Victoria holding one after Evelyn died.

He remembered Richard saying it was a supplement.

He remembered Victoria refusing to believe him.

That was all.

Investigators checked Evelyn’s medical records.

She had taken several medications.

None were normally dispensed in black capsules.

Then the estate pharmacy archive produced an old invoice.

Six years ago.

Three weeks before Evelyn died.

Activated-charcoal digestive supplement — black capsule — 30 count.

Victoria stared.

“There.”

Richard almost felt relief.

Harmless supplement.

Maybe he had been right.

Then the manufacturer records came back.

The supplement used a matte black vegetable capsule.

The current black capsule used glossy gelatin.

Visually similar.

Not the same.

Graham had imitated appearance, not copied the exact product.

That should have closed the old concern.

Instead, Victoria asked:

“Who ordered Mom’s charcoal?”

The account listed:

E. Hale.

Evelyn.

Maybe simple.

Then the household emails showed Evelyn had asked an assistant:

What are these black pills in my bathroom? I didn’t order them.

Two weeks before she died.

Richard read the email.

He had never seen it.

The assistant answered:

Family pharmacy says supplement order. Checking.

No follow-up preserved.

Victoria looked at Richard.

“You told me Mom took them.”

“I thought she did.”

“Based on what?”

He stopped.

He had found the bottle after Evelyn died.

Saw her name.

Assumed.

Then told Victoria:

One of her supplements.

He had converted an assumption into certainty because his daughter was grieving and he wanted the argument to end.

Again.

Then investigators found the concierge pharmacy’s old paper backup.

The supplement order had not been placed by Evelyn.

It had been placed under the household wellness account.

Requesting office:

Hale Family Operations.

Graham’s division.

Graham denied involvement.

At the time, he was traveling in Singapore.

Travel records confirmed.

Who in Family Operations placed it?

Shared credential.

No individual user preserved.

Could be an assistant.

Could be clerical.

Could be a legitimate recommendation from one of Evelyn’s doctors entered poorly.

No reason yet to call it sinister.

Then the medical examiner who reviewed Evelyn’s death record spoke with Detective Ortiz.

There had been no autopsy.

Evelyn had advanced cardiac disease.

She collapsed shortly after dinner.

Paramedics documented a fatal arrhythmia.

Hospital records showed no obvious traumatic cause.

Her death certificate listed natural causes.

Nothing in the current facts invalidated that.

Victoria asked:

“Was toxicology done?”

“Limited hospital screening.”

“Anything unusual?”

“No result flagged.”

Not a murder revelation.

Then Richard’s old home insurance file produced something strange.

After Evelyn collapsed, a wine glass had broken near the drawing-room sofa.

An insurance adjuster photographed the damaged rug the next morning because red wine stained an antique textile.

In one image—

near the edge of the rug—

sat a small black capsule.

Victoria stared.

“I knew it.”

Ortiz stopped her.

“You knew there was a capsule.”

“Yes.”

“You do not know what was inside it.”

Silence.

Correct.

Then another photograph.

The capsule had moved.

First image:

Near the wine stain.

Second image twenty minutes later:

Gone.

No evidence bag.

No collection marker.

No explanation.

The adjuster’s notes contained:

Medication item removed by family before cleaning.

Who removed it?

Not recorded.

Richard did not remember.

Victoria had not arrived yet.

Thomas said he was at the hospital.

Graham was in Singapore.

House staff records incomplete.

Current crime solved one black capsule.

The older one had just become a real question.

Not an answer.
