Chapter 15 - The Dawn on the Horizon

Three days later, the storm had passed, leaving Chicago bathed in crisp, winter sunlight.
The ledgers in Richard Ellison’s journal had unlocked every encrypted file on Lev’s drive. Within forty-eight hours, federal authorities and international police agencies, acting on anonymous tips provided by Alexi’s legal network, seized every asset, shipping vessel, and bank account belonging to Viktor Saranov.
Saranov himself was arrested at Midway Airport while attempting to board a private flight to South America. He would spend the rest of his life inside a federal supermax prison, paying for ten years of blood and corruption.
At the estate on Lake Michigan, the afternoon sun flooded through the grand windows of the study.
Ethan was sitting in the library downstairs, happily working on his new computer, completely unaware of the war that had just ended around him. His tuition was paid in full, his mother’s debt cleared completely by an anonymous endowment fund established by Vulov Enterprises.
Mara stood near the window, looking out at the glittering ice on the lake.
Footsteps sounded behind her. Alexi stepped up, holding two glasses of twenty-five-year-old Macallan whiskey.
He handed one to her.
"A gift?" she asked, raising an eyebrow with a faint, playful smile.
"A celebration," Alexi corrected softly, clinking his glass against hers. "To Richard Ellison. A good man who raised an extraordinary daughter."
Mara took a slow sip of the smooth amber liquid, feeling the warmth spread through her chest. "What happens now, Mr. Vulov?"
Alexi set his glass on the table and stepped closer, taking her glass from her hand and setting it down beside his. He wrapped his arms around her waist, pulling her close, looking down into her bright gray eyes.
"Now," Alexi whispered, his voice deep, rich, and filled with a future they had fought together to build, "you leave Ardane. You come to work for me permanently—as my chief intelligence director."
"And what about my condition?" Mara asked, her hands resting against his dark suit coat, her heart beating fast.
"Which condition?"
"No arrogance."
Alexi laughed—a low, genuine sound that echoed warmly through the sunlit study—and pulled her face up to his, pressing his lips against hers in a long, passionate kiss that sealed their unbroken bond.

"For you, Mara," Alexi murmured against her lips, "I will be anything you want."
Outside, the sun reflected off the snow-covered cliffs, shining brightly over a brand-new horizon where shadows no longer held any power.
