Chapter 8 - The Paper Trail of Blood

While Victoria wept in the cold coastal cabin, Marcus stood by the door, his satellite phone pressed to his ear as he monitored security updates from the estate.

"Mrs. Sterling," Marcus said softly, stepping closer after ten minutes. "We have a situation at the main house."

Victoria slowly wiped her face, drawing herself up from the bedside. Her grief had not evaporated, but it had transmuted into something far more dangerous: an icy, ruthless focus.

"Speak, Marcus," she commanded, her voice steady and lethal.

"Julian Vance was just caught by my team attempting to burn three boxes of private files in the estate incinerator," Marcus reported. "My men restrained him. Among the partially burned documents, we recovered the original 2006 adoption wire transfers and the medical payoff receipts."

Victoria stood up, looking down at her sleeping daughter's peaceful face, then down at Charlotte, who was watching her with trusting amber eyes.

"Who authorized the transfers, Marcus?" Victoria asked quietly.

"Your father, Edward Sterling... and Richard," Marcus revealed grimly. "When you fell pregnant at twenty-two by a local marine biologist whom your father despised, Edward deemed the match a threat to the corporate image. They paid five hundred thousand dollars to the clinic staff to simulate the fire and fake the child's death. Richard facilitated the payoff to secure his position as Edward's primary corporate successor and your future husband."

"And Sarah?"

"Sarah was abandoned at Saint Mary's Orphanage two counties over," Marcus continued. "She was adopted by a poor local fishing family at age four. She lived her entire life thirty miles from your estate, completely unaware that the woman on the Sterling Maritime billboards was the mother who had been lied to."

Victoria closed her eyes for three seconds, letting the cold truth wash through her blood, burning away every remaining trace of doubt, fear, or weakness.

She turned toward Marcus. "Call the state medical examiner. Have Sarah transported to the private Sterling family mausoleum with full honors. And call the State Attorney General."

"And Mr. Sterling?" Marcus asked.

"Bring him to the study," Victoria said, her eyes burning like dark coals. "I am coming back."
