Chapter 2 - THE NAME UNDER THE VIDEO

Evan Miller saw Mara Barrett's comment at 6:12 the next morning. He had already removed Cameron from sparring for a week and ordered him to reimburse the ruined food, but the disciplinary problem inside his gym became irrelevant the moment he searched Seth Mercer's name alongside Fifth Special Forces Group. The first results were old veteran-forum threads, archived local articles and fragments of a military training accident that had occurred eight years earlier at a private facility called Raven Ridge.

The public details were sparse. A night training exercise involving a Fifth Group detachment had ended in an accidental detonation and structural collapse. Sergeant First Class Luke Barrett died, two others were injured and Staff Sergeant Seth Mercer received a formal reprimand for violating a safety boundary immediately before the blast. The articles never explicitly said Seth caused Luke's death, but veteran discussions had filled in the accusation more aggressively than official language ever did.

Miller watched the gym video again. Seth's rear leg had moved carefully, almost protectively, before his hands came up. The old accident report summary mentioned that Mercer suffered significant injuries to his right leg during the same event he supposedly abandoned. That contradiction bothered Miller because the rumors described Seth as someone who panicked, left his assigned position and forced others to enter a dangerous area looking for him. The man in the video had not moved like someone prone to panic.

Noah arrived early for class and found Miller replaying the clip. The coach asked whether he still had the original file, including the footage before and after the part he posted. Noah did, although he immediately worried he had caused a problem. Miller told him not to delete anything and asked him to make the public post private until they understood why a dead soldier's widow was begging strangers to remove it.

Cameron arrived twenty minutes later, angry that the clip had been taken down after reaching almost two hundred thousand views overnight. Miller did not argue about social media. He told Cameron that humiliating a delivery driver for touching a mat with a muddy boot was enough reason to suspend him regardless of who Seth had once been. Cameron started to say that Seth had attacked him, but Noah's uncut footage showed the sequence too clearly for that version to survive.

The first real proof came from a message sent to the gym account shortly before ten. The sender identified himself as Benjamin Torres, formerly of Fifth Group, and attached a photograph of six men standing outside a concrete training structure. Seth was younger, broader through the shoulders and smiling in a way Miller had not seen in the delivery video. Luke Barrett stood beside him with one arm over Seth's shoulder.

Torres wrote only four sentences. Seth Mercer did not run from Raven Ridge. He went back inside. I know because I was already outside when he passed me going the other direction. If that video is really him, don't post where he works.

Miller called the number Torres provided. The man who answered sounded reluctant from the beginning and refused to discuss classified operations because Raven Ridge had not been one; it was a domestic predeployment training event run partly by a private contractor. Torres said he had given a statement after the accident but was told the final inquiry concluded Seth crossed an electronically marked boundary before the detonation, causing an automated breaching system to fire out of sequence.

“Did you believe that?” Miller asked.

“I believed the controller logs would prove it.”

“Did they?”

Torres was silent for several seconds. “The logs disappeared.”

That was the first evidence that the old story was more complicated than online rumors. Seth had indeed left his assigned lane, but Torres insisted the explosion occurred before Seth moved across the boundary. More importantly, Torres remembered Seth running back toward the damaged structure after the blast, not away from it.

Miller asked about the leg injury. Torres explained that Seth's knee and lower leg were crushed when part of an interior stairwell collapsed during the rescue. He spent months in rehabilitation and never fully recovered. “That's why what people say about him leaving Luke in there makes me sick,” Torres added. “He got that leg trying to bring Luke out.”

The contradiction was now physical rather than emotional. The official summary described Seth's unauthorized movement as the action that caused the blast, yet a witness said Seth crossed the critical boundary only after the detonation and was injured inside the structure afterward.

Miller wanted to contact Seth, but the delivery app would not reveal a driver's personal information. Noah provided the order receipt from the previous evening, which showed only Seth's first name and a support number. Miller decided not to push further until another message reached the gym account.

This one came from Mara Barrett herself.

She did not threaten them or defend the old report. She asked for the original video because she wanted to see Seth's face clearly.

At the end of her message she added something Miller did not expect.

If that really is Seth, tell him I found Luke's old phone.
