Chapter 4 - SILENCE AND SURVEILLANCE

The explosive sound of the shattering glass echoed off the tin ceiling tiles like a gunshot.
Across the diner, two late-night patrons—a trucker in a faded baseball cap and a sleepy couple sitting near the jukebox—jumped in their seats, turning around in alarm.
From the kitchen, Mel poked his head through the pass-through window, his face red with frustration. “Sophia! What the hell was that—?”
Mel’s voice choked back into his throat the moment he took in the scene at the door. He caught sight of the three broad-shouldered men in tailored dark suits, the lethal composure radiating from Dante, and the subtle, dangerous posture of Bodyguard 2, whose hand was now visibly wedged inside his dark jacket, ready to draw. Mel slowly backed away from the window, pulling his head back into the shadows of the kitchen without another word.
Bodyguard 1 shifted his heavy frame forward, his boots stepping past the threshold to secure the perimeter, his eyes locked on the diner's rear emergency exit. Bodyguard 2 remained posted by the main glass door, his gaze fixed on the front windows, ensuring no one entered or left.
Inside the dining room, no one moved. The silence was suffocating, broken only by the rhythmic drip... drip... drip of hot coffee running down the wooden baseboards beneath the counter.
Sophia stood frozen in the middle of the dark spill, surrounded by gleaming shards of wet glass. Her breath came in short, shallow hitches. Instinctively, as if driven by a primal need to shield what she carried, her left hand moved off the counter edge and wrapped firmly across the upper curve of her swollen stomach. Her fingers dug gently into the pink fabric, her knuckles turning white.
Dante did not look at the shattered glass. He didn't look at the steam curling up around her ankles. His dark, intense gaze remained pinned to her hand resting over her belly.

He took a slow, deliberate step forward. The soles of his leather shoes made a soft, wet sound as he stepped directly into the fringe of the coffee spill. His voice came out as a low, gravelly rasp—shocked, yet laced with a dangerous undertone that made the hair on the back of Sophia’s neck stand up.
“Sophia.”
