Chapter 3 - The Command of Will

"Willa, this dog is property, valuable property," the vet protested, glancing at the security guards, who shifted uncomfortably, their eyes tracking the massive dog. "He must be stabilized."

"He needs to want to live, not be kept alive," Willa replied, ignoring the vet completely. She looked at Nero again, dropping to her knees many feet away, keeping her body posture non-threatening but confident. The live-action realism amplified the risk; she was small, Nero was huge, and she was entering the striking range of a wounded, aggressive animal.

"Mr. Drummond, I cannot be held liable if she is attacked," the vet said, stepping back. Miles nodded once to the vet, signaling him to withdraw, then turned to Willa. "He’s yours. For now."

Willa ignored the human conversation. She focused entirely on Nero. She knew the sequence. First, connection. Then, safety. Finally, trust.

She slowly began to shuffle closer to the massive dog, closing the distance inch by inch. As she crossed an invisible line, Nero’s ears flattened slightly. He didn't raise his head, but he let out a low, distinct growl—a warning rumble that vibrated through the marble floor and echoed slightly in the massive, high-ceilinged penthouse.

The sound electrified the room. Surrounding security men immediately reacted, their hands reaching toward their suit jackets where their weapons were concealed, their tactical assessment shifting instantly to termination. Miles stepped toward the vet, ready to intervene.

Willa heard the guns being unholstered, the subtle click of safety catches being released. She didn't look at them. Instead, she raised her hand in another firm, calm "stop" command toward the guards. "He's not being aggressive. He's setting a boundary. Respect it."

She looked back at Nero, who was watching her with those sorrowful eyes, the weak growl continuing.

Willa stops shuffling. She places her palm flat against the cold marble floor, directly in front of Nero, several inches from his powerful muzzle. It was a gesture of complete submission and profound respect, offering him her scent and her safety, placing herself entirely at his mercy.

The growling stops. Nero’s ears, previously flattened, suddenly twitch, his pupils dilating slightly.

Willa looks from the dog to the floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking Manhattan. The view was beautiful but artificial, a cage made of glass and steel. This dog didn't care about the penthouse. This breed was built for duty, for guard work, for home. He didn't belong in the clouds; he belonged on the land.

Willa leans in slightly and whispers a single word, her voice holding the raw emotional resonance of the crime-family mystery-drama look. "Home."

Nero’s ears twitch again. The entire, massive, luxurious room falls into a sudden, perfect silence. Even the guards holding their guns motionless are staring, captivated by the inexplicable shift in the animal's behavior. The live-action realism of the moment makes the silence loud. Nero just watches her, the sorrow in his eyes slowly transforming into something else: remembrance.
