Chapter 4 - THE BRASS KEY

Russell leaned over the table, his heavy gray beard almost touching the wet paper as he squinted at the signature Jonah was pointing to. Micah leaned over his shoulder, his eyes scanning the name typed neatly beneath the pen strokes.

"Vanguard?" Russell whispered, his brow knitting together in deep confusion. "That's... that's the development firm buying up the old timber lots down near the quarry. Jonah, that firm is owned by—"

"I know who owns it," Jonah interrupted sharply.

Before Russell could process the implications, Emma took half a step closer to the edge of the booth. The oversized sleeves of her denim jacket brushed against the vinyl seat. She reached deep into the front pocket of her canvas shorts.

She pulled out a tiny, heavy object wrapped in a small piece of oiled cloth.

She unrolled the cloth carefully in her palm, revealing a small, antique brass key. It was no larger than an inch and a half long, its surface dull, scratched, and stamped with a three-digit number: 408. The teeth of the key were strangely shaped—not a standard house key or padlock key, but a specialized bit key used for old safety deposit boxes or industrial lockers.

Emma reached out her small hand and pressed the small brass key directly into Jonah’s broad, calloused palm.

"Dad said you’d know what this opens," Emma said softly, looking directly into his eyes. "He kept it inside his boot lining for twelve years. Before... before he died in the hospital, he gave it to Mom and told her to find the man with the raven on his arm if anyone ever came looking for our house."

Jonah stared down at his open palm.

The tiny brass key looked absurdly small sitting against the rough, dark skin of his palm, right next to the thick veins running up toward his wrist. The cold brass seemed to radiate an impossible weight under the diner’s fluorescent lights.

His face lost every trace of color.

The blood seemed to drain entirely from his features, leaving his tan skin pale, drawn, and hollow around the eyes.

Russell leaned over the bench, staring at the small key in Jonah's hand.

"Jonah?" Russell asked, his voice strained, laced with an edge of fear that none of the men had heard from him in twenty years. "Jonah, what is that? What does 408 mean?"
