Chapter 5 - AN UNBEARABLE RESEMBLANCE

The child cleared the threshold of the wall, crawling out onto the glossy white oak floorboards of the corridor.
Under the direct, bright glare of the overhead lighting, the full picture of her appearance struck Ryan like a physical blow to the chest. Her skin was remarkably fair, carrying a delicate, rosy undertone across her cheekbones that was currently marred by streaks of black grease and pale gray gypsum dust. Her nose was small, straight, and slightly upturned at the tip—a feature that Ryan knew with terrifying intimacy.
Her jawline was sharp, square, and stubborn, framed by high cheekbones that gave her an aristocratic, fierce structure despite her hollow, undernourished cheeks.
And her eyes.
Her eyes were not brown, nor were they hazel. They were an unmistakable, piercing shade of deep, slate-gray—flecked with rings of dark sapphire around the iris. It was a genetic anomaly that existed in only one family Ryan had ever known: his own. They were his mother’s eyes. They were the exact, identical eyes that stared back at him every single morning in the bathroom mirror.
Ryan’s breath caught in his throat. His entire body locked up, the air leaving his lungs in a silent, stunned gasp. His outstretched hand remained frozen in mid-air, trembling visibly now. The cold composure of the mafia boss cracked, shattering into a million jagged pieces of incomprehension.
Beside him, Emily had stopped breathing altogether.
Her sharp, perceptive eyes darted rapidly between the little girl’s face and Ryan’s profile. Emily knew every line, every contour, every distinctive genetic marker of her husband’s lineage. She had studied Ryan’s childhood photographs, had seen the portraits of his late parents hanging in the estate’s private gallery. The resemblance was not coincidental. It was not a passing similarity. It was an undeniable, living blueprint of Ryan Vance’s own blood.
Emily’s fair skin turned utterly pale, a sudden, suffocating knot of dread and betrayal tightening around her heart. "Ryan…?" she whispered, the syllable barely audible, pregnant with an agony of unspoken questions.
Before Ryan could even turn his head, Lily wriggled free from Emily’s loosening grip.
The three-year-old dropped to her feet, her little white shoes padding across the oak floor without a shred of fear. She walked right past Ryan’s frozen form, stepped directly in front of the feral, dusty child, and crouched down.
With the pure, unhesitating grace that only an innocent child could possess, Lily reached out her small, warm, clean hand and wrapped her chubby fingers gently around the mysterious girl’s dirt-streaked knuckles.
"Don't cry," Lily said softly, smiling with her bright, rosy cheeks. "I got the turkey ones for you."
The touch of Lily’s hand seemed to break whatever brittle dam had been holding the older child’s spirit together.
A single, fat tear tracked through the dust on the little girl’s cheek, carving a clean, pale line down to her trembling chin. Her slate-gray eyes shifted away from Lily, slowly rising until they locked squarely onto Ryan’s rugged, grief-stricken face.
Her small, parched lips parted.
"Daddy…" she whispered.
The word was barely more than an exhalation, a desperate, raspy sound carried on a sob.
Slowly, lifting an arm that seemed almost too heavy for her frail shoulder to support, the little girl reached out. Her trembling, dirt-smudged fingertips drifted through the warm air and pressed lightly, reverently, against the dark stubble of Ryan’s square jaw.
Ryan felt the cold touch of her skin against his face, and his world tilted on its axis. The roaring silence of the corridor pressed in on his eardrums, drowning out the ticking of his gold watch, the hum of the house, the beat of his own heart.
He was paralyzed, staring into the face of a child who carried his face, his eyes, his blood—a child he had never seen before in his life.

"Who are you?" Ryan whispered, his voice cracking, completely stunned.
Slowly, agonizingly, his head turned, his wide, haunted eyes meeting Emily’s devastated, questioning gaze.
