Chapter 7 - SHADOWS OF FORT BRAGG

The silence hanging over Bay 7 felt heavier than the concussive roar of the heavy-caliber rifles firing three lanes down. The ocean breeze blew a stray lock of brown hair across Sarah’s face, but she didn't move to brush it away. Her right hand lingered near her hip, inches from where the red jacket was knotted around her waist.

Mercer cleared his throat, trying to regain his authority as the senior instructor present. "Miller, what the hell are you talking about? She shot a fast drill. It's a solid grip—"

"Shut up, Mercer," the Quiet Marine—Corporal Miller—said without turning his head.

The four young Marines gasped softly. To tell a senior marksmanship instructor to shut up was a court-martial-level offense in their world, yet Mercer didn't issue a reprimand. He took a half-step back, sensing the terrifying shift in gravity that had taken over his lane.

Miller kept his dark eyes locked on Sarah. "That magazine strip wasn't USMC. It wasn't SEAL Recon. It was the two-finger thumb press from the Activity’s Special Projects Detachment."

Sarah’s posture stiffened into absolute stone. The red jacket tied around her waist rustled as she took a slow, deep breath, her chest rising and falling in controlled cadence.

"You're out of your lane, Corporal," Sarah said softly, her voice carrying an edge that made the young Marines behind Mercer take a step back.

"My brother was in Delta’s B-Squad," Miller replied, his voice barely audible above the wind, filled with a mixture of reverence and profound sorrow. "He showed me that reload clear once after a deployment in Northern Syria. He told me only six instructors in the entire Department of Defense were authorized to teach it."

He looked closely at her face—at the faint, silver scar running along her hairline, partially hidden by her brown ponytail, and the hardened, weary depth behind her brown eyes.

"You're Major Vance," Miller whispered, the realization hitting him like a physical blow. "The one who pulled the rear-guard element out of the valley near Al-Tanf in 2021."

Sarah didn't confirm the name. She didn't deny it. But the sudden, rigid stillness in her eyes was all the confirmation Miller needed.
