Chapter 8 - THE WHISPER AT THE THRESHOLD

The man in the charcoal coat stopped directly in front of Suite 4227.

He didn't knock. He didn't reach for an electronic key card. Instead, he pulled his right hand out of his trench coat pocket. Clutched in his gloved fingers was a compact, silver electronic bypass tool—a military-grade lock-picking device used by high-tier surveillance teams and wetwork specialists.

He pressed the device against the key card reader. The LED light on the door panel flickered from red to yellow, pulsing rapidly as the digital code was bypassed.

Clare stood twenty yards away, paralyzed by fear. She knew she should walk away, step into the service pantry, and call security. But she also remembered the look in Nicholas’s eyes—and the reality that if a gunfight broke out on this floor, the entire wing would become a kill zone.

Before the silver device could turn the light green, the heavy walnut door of Suite 4227 swung inward.

Nicholas stood in the opening.

He had buttoned his white shirt halfway up, his dark eyes burning with an intense, icy clarity. He didn't look surprised to see the man standing on his welcome mat.

"You're late, Frank," Nicholas said, his baritone cutting through the quiet corridor with effortless authority.

The man in the coat, Frank, didn't flinch. A slow, dark smile spread across his scarred jaw.

"Traffic on Lake Shore Drive was hell, Nicholas," Frank replied smoothly, his hand sliding back into his coat pocket where the outline of a heavy suppressor was clearly visible. "Your uncle sent his regards. He was very disappointed to learn the fire on the ramp didn't take."

Nicholas didn't look at Frank's pocket. He stood broad and solid in the doorway, blocking any view of the suite's interior.

"My uncle always was cheap with his explosives," Nicholas said flatly. "He should have spent more on the wire team."

Frank took a half-step closer, his voice dropping into a dangerous whisper that barely reached Clare’s ears down the hall. "He wants it finished quietly, Nicholas. No headlines. No police reports. Just a quiet heart attack in a luxury bed."

Nicholas tilted his head slightly, his eyes narrowing. "And you think you're the man to deliver it?"
