Chapter 7 - THE RECKONING OF THE GUNNY

The heavy silence inside The Devil’s Anchor was broken only by the quiet, rhythmic clicking of Alexis's dog tags as she took two slow steps forward toward the bar.
Every eye in the room followed her movement. The eight young Marines who had laughed at her minutes ago were now standing rigidly at attention beside their booth, their faces pale with intense shock and deep shame.
Bull did not move. He stood frozen beside the mahogany counter, his dark-green dress uniform suddenly feeling like a lead suit.
Alexis stopped three feet from Bull. She looked up into his broad, pale face, her clear blue eyes showing no hatred, no desire for revenge, and no petty anger. She simply looked at him as a senior commander looks at a subordinate who has lost his way.
"Gunnery Sergeant Crawford," Alexis spoke, her deep, calm voice cutting through the room with absolute authority.
Bull’s chin snapped up instinctively, his body locking into a rigid, textbook military stance of attention. "Ma'am... Captain... I... I had no idea—"
Alexis held up a single hand, stopping his apology before he could finish it.
"Your uniform is immaculate, Sergeant," Alexis said softly, her eyes sweeping over the ribbons and gold wings on his chest. "You've served this country honorably. But if you ever use that uniform to intimidate civilians or younger service members in a public house again... I will personally ensure your retirement papers are processed by sunrise."
Bull swallowed hard, his throat dry, his jaw trembling as he offered a sharp, crisp nod. "Understood, Ma'am. It won't happen again. I swear it."
Alexis turned her head toward the corner booth where the eight young Marines were standing at attention.

"Sit down, Marines," Alexis ordered gently. "Finish your drinks. And remember whose shoulders you're standing on."
"Yes, Ma'am!" the young Marines answered in unison, their voices tight with profound respect.
