Chapter 7 - THE UNMASKING OF A TRAITOR

Outside the vault door, standing framed in the dim yellow light of the subterranean corridor, was Nathan Cross.

He had not entered the wine cellar. He stood just beyond the threshold, his posture unnaturally still, his leather-bound folder tucked tightly under his arm.

As Dominic turned his head to look at him, Nathan slowly stepped into the doorway. His polished, handsome face was a masterclass in controlled emotion. He looked down at Mia lying bruised and broken in Dominic’s arms, and his eyes widened with what appeared to be total, heartbroken shock.

"My God..." Nathan breathed out softly, his voice trembling with well-rehearsed horror. "Mia... my God, who did this to you?"

He took a step into the cellar, his hands opening in a gesture of frantic concern.

"Dom, this is insane," Nathan continued rapidly, his tone growing furious with righteous indignation. "Who had access down here? Was it the new security shift? Was it Claire? I swear to you, Dom, I had no idea. I was told she took her bags and left for Pennsylvania! I’m going to find whoever touched her and pull them apart with my bare hands—"

"Nathan."

Dominic didn't yell. He didn't shout. He spoke the single name in a low, flat tone that instantly cut through Nathan's frantic speech like a heavy iron door slamming shut.

The room fell into an agonizing silence. The only sound was the faint, rapid breathing of Mia and the quiet, hiccuping sobs of little Harper.

Mia heard Nathan's voice.

The moment the smooth, polished baritone reached her ears, her entire body went rigid.

Dominic felt the sudden, violent tremor that ran through Mia’s frame. It wasn't the shaking of cold or exhaustion; it was the pure, visceral shock of absolute terror.

Mia’s head snapped up. She lifted her weak, trembling right hand and grabbed Dominic’s cream suit jacket with a grip so tight her fingernails threatened to tear through the heavy wool. She stared past Dominic, her wide, bloodshot eyes locked directly onto Nathan standing in the doorway.

Her breath hitched violently in her chest. She couldn't speak—her throat was too dry, her body too weak—but her face told the entire story. The color drained completely from her pale cheeks, leaving her looking like a ghost.

Dominic looked down at Mia. He saw the sheer horror in her eyes as she stared at Nathan.

Then, Mia slowly, agonizingly turned her head toward Dominic. She looked into her boss's eyes, and with every remaining shred of strength in her broken body, she shook her head back and forth in a frantic, desperate warning.

Don't trust him, her silent motion screamed. It was him.

Dominic felt a cold spike of absolute clarity hit his chest.

Every piece of the puzzle fell into place with terrifying precision. The sudden trip to Pennsylvania. The locked playroom. The brand-new brass padlock approved by Nathan. The dismissal of Harper's cries as "bad dreams." The complete silence from the internal security network.

Claire couldn't have executed this alone. Claire was a housekeeper. Only one person had the authority to override the estate's security protocols, clear the camera feeds for three consecutive days, and coordinate a cover story that kept the entire staff from asking questions.

It was Nathan Cross. His right-hand man. His lieutenant of seventeen years. The man he had trusted with his family, his business, and his life.

Dominic did not react outwardly. He didn't draw a gun. He didn't scream. He slowly, deliberately lowered Mia back onto the folded topcoat that Marcus had laid on the floor, making sure her head was supported and that Harper was safely tucked behind her mother’s shoulder.

Then, Dominic Vale stood up.

He rose to his full, imposing height. In the dim light of the stone cellar, standing in his tailored cream suit stained with the blood and grime of his trusted manager, he looked like an ancient judge preparing to hand down an irreversible sentence.

He slowly turned around to face Nathan.

Nathan remained in the doorway, his handsome face still wearing that carefully constructed mask of concern, but as his eyes met Dominic's icy blue glare, the mask began to fracture. He saw the total lack of doubt in Dominic's eyes. He saw the cold, absolute certainty.

Nathan knew it was over.
