Chapter 7 - THE ENEMY AT THE GATE

The air between the farmhouse porch and the three idling SUVs was suffocatingly tense. The hum of the V8 engines vibrated against the wooden siding of the old house.

The scarred man standing at the front—whose name was Frank, Owen’s former second-in-command—took another half-step forward, his dark eyes searching Owen’s motionless face for any sign of recognition.

"Boss," Frank said again, his voice lower this time, tight with intense urgency. "We’ve been hunting every hospital, morgue, and back-road ditch between here and the river for twelve days. The syndicate thinks you're dead. Marcus has already called a vote to seize the territory."

Inside the farmhouse, behind the thin glass pane of the window, Lucas leaned close to Hannah's ear.

"Who are they?" Lucas whispered, his voice shaking. "Why is he calling Owen 'Boss'?"

Hannah didn't answer. Her eyes were fixed entirely on Owen's broad back. She saw the tension in his powerful neck, the way his knuckles were clenched into white-hot fists at his sides. She saw a man caught between two worlds—the warm, innocent home that had saved his life, and the dark, violent empire that had returned to claim him.

Owen slowly stepped down off the bottom porch stair, taking two deliberate steps onto the gravel.

"Frank," Owen spoke for the first time. His voice was different now—no longer the gentle, quiet tone he had used with the children, but a heavy, resonant baritone that carried total, terrifying authority.

Frank’s eyes flared with visible relief. "You remember."

"I remember enough," Owen growled, stopping five feet from his former lieutenant. "I remember that my name is Victor Vance. And I remember that I brought violence to every room I ever stepped into."

Frank frowned, confused by the strange, somber tone in his commander's voice. He glanced past Owen’s shoulder, his sharp eyes catching sight of the three young orphans standing wide-eyed behind the farmhouse window.

Frank’s hand moved instinctively toward the inside of his leather coat.

"Who are the kids, Boss?" Frank asked, his tone hardening into tactical operational assessment. "Did they see your face? Do we need to secure the perimeter?"

The moment Frank’s hand touched his jacket lining, Owen moved with speed that defied human reaction time.

In a fraction of a second, Owen closed the distance between them, his thick left hand shooting out like a vice to grab Frank by the throat, pinning the broad-shouldered lieutenant against the hot hood of the lead Escalade with a thunderous CRASH.

Instantly, the six other security men drawn weapons—silenced handguns snapping up in perfect tactical synchronization, pointed directly at Owen’s chest.

"DON'T TOUCH THEM!" Owen roared, his dark eyes burning with a terrifying, demonic fury that sent a shockwave of terror through every man in the yard. "If any of you so much as look at those children again, I will tear this entire team apart with my bare hands!"
