Chapter 4 - An Unexplainable Calm

Elina’s heart pounded against her ribs like a trapped bird. She looked at the terrifying mob boss, then down at the fragile nine-month-old child who was currently clutching her thumb as if it were his only lifeline in a stormy sea.
"Sir, I'm... I'm just a waitress," Elina stammered softly, her voice trembling. "I shouldn't... I'm working, and—"
"I am not asking you as a patron of this restaurant," Matteo said quietly, his voice dangerously low. "I am telling you. Hold my son."
Elina took a deep, steadying breath. She realized that refusing this man was not a viable option, but more than that, looking down at the desperate, pleading eyes of Baby Leo, she found that she didn't want to refuse.
She stepped closer to the leather booth, closing the remaining distance between them. Slowly, carefully, she extended her hands. She slid her warm, gentle hands under Baby Leo's arms, supporting his small back and bottom just as she had seen mothers do a thousand times.
Matteo slowly released his grip on the boy, his large hands lingering for a fraction of a second near Elina’s wrists before pulling back completely.
Elina lifted Baby Leo into her arms and pulled him gently against her chest.
What happened next stunned everyone in Restaurante Orelio.
The second Leo’s small body touched Elina’s chest, his tiny fingers let go of her thumb and wrapped tightly around her lapels. He buried his small face into the crook of her neck, right against the warm skin exposed above her black uniform collar.
He let out a deep, trembling, little sigh—a sigh of absolute relief, safety, and profound peace.
Within seconds, his frantic breathing calmed into a rhythmic, soft cadence. His eyelids grew heavy, fluttering closed as his little body melted completely against her. He didn't cry. He didn't fight. He simply rested his cheek against her collarbone, completely relaxed, as if he had finally returned home after a long, grueling journey.
Elina stood frozen in the middle of the golden-lit dining room, holding the mob boss’s son against her heart. She instinctively began to sway slightly side to side, her hand gently patting the baby’s tiny, black-vested back with a soft, rhythmic patter.
The whole table went entirely still. The two bodyguards exchanged alarmed, bewildered glances. Neither of them had ever seen the boy react to anyone like this.
Matteo remained seated, but his posture had gone completely rigid. His eyes were fixed on Elina and the child resting peacefully in her arms. He looked as if he had just witnessed a miracle—or a ghost.
"He won't let anyone hold him," Matteo said softly, his gravelly voice barely louder than a whisper, carrying a heavy weight of disbelief. "Not his nannies. Not the family doctors. Not even my own sister. He screams until he chokes if anyone else touches him."
Elina looked down at the sleeping child in her arms, feeling an overwhelming, unexplainable warmth blooming in her chest. She stroked the baby's soft blonde hair gently with her fingertips.

Then, she raised her eyes to meet Matteo's stunned gaze.
"Then why me?" Elina asked softly. "Why is he like this with me?"
