Chapter 4 - THE THRESHOLD OF FATHERHOOD

The heavy thud of Ethan’s motorcycle boots against the oak floorboards shattered the intimate quiet of the kitchen.

Clara spun around in an instant, her body instinctively shifting to place herself between the front entrance and the twins. Her hazel eyes widened in pure shock as she took in the sight of the giant man standing in the doorway.

Ethan was a terrifying sight to any civilian: bare, muscular torso covered in dark ink, heavy biker vest hanging open, his face dark with dark stubble, and his jaw set in a hard line.

"Mr. Whitaker!" Clara gasped, her hand flying to her chest, her breathing suddenly rapid. "I... we didn't hear your truck."

Before Clara could apologize further, the twins registered who was standing in front of them.

"Daddy!" Avery shouted.

Both girls let go of Clara and sprinted across the polished marble floor, their little shoes squeaking against the tile.

Ethan dropped to one knee, his massive frame folding down to meet them. He opened his thick, tattooed arms and caught both girls at once, pulling them tightly against his chest. Avery buried her face in his neck, while Sophie wrapped her arms around his bare shoulder, holding her stuffed rabbit tightly against his biker vest.

Ethan buried his face in their soft hair, inhaling the sweet scent of baby shampoo and strawberry toothpaste. For five long seconds, the hardened club president closed his eyes, his rough hands cradling their small backs with terrifying gentleness.

When he opened his eyes, he looked up over his daughters' shoulders directly at Clara.

Clara remained standing near the island, her hands folded neatly over her white apron, looking flushed and uncertain. She looked at his bare, tattooed torso and quickly dropped her gaze to the floor, uncomfortable with his sudden, overpowering presence.

"You take care of them like this every day?" Ethan asked. His voice was low, deep, and gravelly, carrying the rough edge of a man who spoke very little.

Clara hesitated, smoothing a stray strand of brown hair back into her loose bun. She looked at him gently, her eyes showing no fear of his imposing physical stature—only a deep, quiet understanding of his pain.

"They miss you, Ethan," Clara said softly, using his first name for the very first time.

The five words hit Ethan like a physical blow to the chest. The air left his lungs. He stared at her, his dark eyes searching hers, finding nothing but raw, unfiltered truth.
