Chapter 5 - UNEXPECTED GRACE

Without another word, Gabriel unbuttoned the single button of his tailored black dinner jacket. He slid the heavy wool jacket off his broad shoulders with a fluid, practiced movement and draped it carefully over the back of a stainless-steel kitchen chair, revealing the dark silk shirt fitted tightly against his chest and shoulders. He unbuttoned his platinum cufflinks, rolling his sleeves up two neat turns to expose his forearms and the dark, intricate ink etched into his skin.
He walked straight to the clean supply counter, reached into a cabinet, and pulled out two large, heavy-duty black plastic takeout containers with clear lids.
Maeve’s eyes widened. She quickly stepped forward, her hands raised in protest. "Mr. Hart, please, you don't have to do that! I... I only asked for enough for us for tonight. Just a small foil wrap would have been fine."
Gabriel didn't stop. He picked up a large silver serving spoon from a clean tray, testing its weight in his hand. He looked at Maeve, his face devoid of pity, offering only a calm, practical efficiency.
"Understood," Gabriel said smoothly.
He turned to the hot pass and began filling the first container. He didn't skimp or hurry. With steady, practiced precision, he laid down two large, juicy portions of the herb-roasted chicken breast. Beside the chicken, he scooped a generous, steaming mound of the garlic mashed potatoes, smoothing the top before adding a healthy serving of bright green beans.
Maeve stood beside him, completely stunned. Around them, the kitchen staff watched in absolute, stunned silence. Line cooks, dishwashers, and catering staff stood motionless, watching one of the most feared figures in the Midwest personally meal-prep dinner for a temporary waitress’s son.
Gabriel closed the lid on the first container with a crisp, audible snap. He picked up a second container and began filling it just as generously, adding two warm, golden dinner rolls on top before sealing it tight.
He wiped a tiny drop of stray gravy from the edge of the container with a clean linen napkin, making sure the presentation was immaculate.
Maeve watched him, her mind struggling to process the moment. There was no grandstanding in his actions, no audience he was trying to impress. He moved with the quiet, unbothered grace of a man who answered to no one, yet chose to use his absolute authority to ensure a seven-year-old boy had a hot meal.

"He makes it look... ordinary," Maeve thought to herself, a lump forming in her throat as the sheer weight of his kindness washed over her defense mechanisms.
Gabriel picked up both heavy takeout containers, turned to Maeve, and held them out to her with a gentle, encouraging nod.
