Chapter 5 - THE SHADOWS ARRIVE

The sudden silence that followed Carter’s outburst was broken by a soft, electronic beep from behind the bulletproof glass partition.

The female dispatcher sat frozen in her swivel chair. Her eyes were glued to her computer terminal, where three secondary emergency lines were flashing bright crimson simultaneously. Her headset was buzzing with urgent automated radio alerts from the county dispatch system.

She slowly stood up from her chair, her hands trembling as she looked through the glass window toward the booking area.

"Sheriff..." the dispatcher said, her voice barely higher than a whisper.

Voss didn't look at her; his eyes were still locked onto Carter and Amara. "Not now, Martha!"

"Sheriff... look out the front windows," Martha insisted, her voice shaking with genuine, unscripted fear. "Sheriff... people are here for Colonel Whitlock."

Voss turned his head slowly toward the double glass doors at the front entrance of the station.

Outside, in the bright, humid morning sun, two sleek, pitch-black Chevrolet Suburbans with dark tint on every window pulled into the gravel parking lot at high speed. They didn't park in visitor spaces. They swung around in a tactical formation, coming to a sudden, synchronized halt directly in front of the main entrance doors, blocking all traffic.

The vehicles bore no municipal logos, no state trooper emblems, and no civilian license plates—only simple, matte-black government plates displaying high-level federal registration numbers.

For the first time since he had slammed Amara’s wrist into the diner table, Sheriff Dalton Voss felt real, paralyzing horror grip his heart. The color vanished from his skin entirely, his knees visibly weakening beneath his heavy frame.

Carter looked out the glass, swallowed hard, and immediately pulled the brass key ring from his pocket. Without asking for permission, he stepped behind Amara and gently inserted the key into the steel lock of her handcuffs.

CLICK. CLICK.

The steel bracelets released their grip, swinging open.

Amara brought her arms forward slowly, rotating her wrists to restore circulation. Two deep, dark red indents were clearly visible against her fair skin where the steel had bitten into her flesh during Voss’s rough handling.

She did not rub them aggressively. She simply straightened her crisp white cotton shirt, pulled the lapels of her denim jacket flat against her chest, and looked at Carter.

"Preserve the body cams," Amara said softly, her voice steady as a heartbeat. "The booking footage. The dispatch logs. Everything."

Carter looked her dead in the eyes and gave a sharp, solemn nod.

"Yes, ma'am," Carter said quietly. "Everything will be preserved. I'll lock the servers myself."
