Chapter 53 - THE LEDGER BENEATH THE STONE

The rain fell in sheets across the granite pavers of the United States Naval Academy, turning the historic yard into a desolate maze of reflecting pools and bare oaks. The emergency sirens from the nearby municipal district had died away, smothered by the widespread power grid failure that had plunged the colonial city into absolute, predatory blackness.
A commandeered navy utility truck rolled silently through the secondary service gate, its headlights off, guided only by Emma’s night-vision monocular. Beside her on the passenger seat, Captain Donovan leaned forward, clutching his dislocated shoulder with a grim, tight jaw.
"The civilian authorities think this is a transformer fire from the storm," Donovan rasped, his breath misting on the cold glass. "The local police aren't even responding to alarms. Emma... who is the man behind that voice?"
"Admiral Alistair Vance," Emma said, her voice completely flat as she swung the truck into the shadows behind the chapel colonnade. "The Assistant Secretary of Defense for Special Operations. He’s the uncle who buried the inquiries when my grandfather was executed in ninety-one."
Donovan’s breath caught. "Alistair Vance? He sits on the National Security Council. He’s the one who authorized your father’s final task force."
"He didn't authorize it; he designed its failure," Emma stated, setting the emergency brake with a quiet click. "Davies was the banker, Kincaid was the trigger, but Alistair Vance was the pen. For thirty years, the Vance family has used the Black Shutter protocols to eliminate any officer who questioned why billions in defense procurement were vanishing into European shell companies."
"And the fourth ledger?"
"It’s not on paper, Donovan," Emma said, pulling the Aegis II across her lap. "My grandfather knew paper could be burned and servers could be scrubbed. When the original Pale Horse team realized they were being hunted in ninety-one, they had the master list of accounts hand-chiseled into the structural lead plates lining the burial vault of John Paul Jones. It’s been sitting beneath two hundred years of naval history, protected by four feet of solid porphyry."
She popped the rifle's chamber, inspecting the gleaming, hand-balanced .30-06 round resting on the follower. One shot. The final grain of powder.
"Stay at this terminal, Captain," Emma commanded, tapping the tactical data-link on the dashboard. "When I reach the crypt, I will force Vance’s satellite uplink to broad-cast unencrypted across the emergency maritime frequency. Every military base from Norfolk to Pearl Harbor will receive the raw telemetry. Make sure the civilian news networks capture the mirror."
Donovan gripped her forearm, his face pale with dread. "Emma, you have one bullet. Vance has an entire corporate assault element inside that chapel."
May you like
Emma looked down at his hand, her pale gray eyes completely still.
"One bullet is all my grandfather had left when they took him, Captain," she said softly. "It’s more than enough to close his ledger."
