Chapter 9 - THE LESSON IN STRUCTURAL MECHANICS

What happened next occurred with a violent, terrifying efficiency that no camera phone in the room was fast enough to capture in smooth motion.

As Tyler’s body rotated through the air, his spinning kick accelerating toward its target, the Retired Master Instructor didn't jump back or attempt a theatrical block.

He moved forward.

He slipped inside the arc of the kick by a matter of inches—a micro-adjustment of footwork that completely negated Tyler’s leg reach. As Tyler’s heel zipped harmlessly past his left ear, the older man’s red-wrapped hand shot out like a hydraulic piston.

PAK!

His open palm struck the side of Tyler’s chest, interrupting the younger man's rotational momentum instantly. Before Tyler could regain his balance or touch his foot back to the mat, the instructor’s right hand moved in a short, brutal arc, sweeping Tyler’s standing leg cleanly out from under him.

THUD!

The impact of Tyler slamming onto the high-density blue mat echoed like thunder through the gym floorboards.

The entire crowd gasped in unison.

Tyler lay flat on his back, his breath instantly expelled from his lungs in a sharp, wheezing gasp. His pristine white uniform was rumpled, his black belt untied and lying flat beside him on the canvas. He stared up at the high industrial ceiling, his eyes wide with utter shock, his chest heaving as he fought to draw air back into his diaphragm.

The Retired Master Instructor did not pursue him to the ground. He stood two feet away, completely calm, his posture relaxed, his hands lowered to his sides. He hadn't even broken a sweat.

"First rule of engagement," the older man said softly, looking down at the gasping athlete. "Never mistake age for weakness, and never mistake silence for lack of capability."
