Chapter 10 - THE STAND AT THE FENCE

From across the dark, silent expanse of the recycling yard, a heavy, brutal sound echoed above the noise of chasing footsteps.

CRASH.

Sofia paused beneath the fence, her beige hoodie snagged slightly on a rusty wire barb, her eyes turning back toward the high halogen lights of the yard.

Fifty yards away, standing on top of a three-tiered stack of crushed automobiles, stood Luke Whitaker.

Silhouetted against the dark mountain sky and the orange glare of the city lights, the broad-shouldered President of the Crown Serpents looked like a ancient warrior making his final stand. He held a six-foot heavy steel pipe in his right hand, his open leather vest flying in the desert wind, his broad chest bleeding from two fresh scratches.

Below him, surrounded by three police officers and six heavily armed bikers, Sergeant Miller raised his service weapon.

Luke didn't look at the guns pointed at his chest. He didn't look at his former club brothers who had betrayed him.

His gray eyes swept across the dark perimeter of the western fence until he caught sight of the small, pale face looking back at him through the chain-link wire.

He gave Sofia one single, slow nod of his head—a silent message that carried all the gratitude, respect, and protection a dying king could offer to the small stranger who had saved his life in the dark.

Sofia pulled herself free from the wire.

She gathered her heavy canvas bag into her arms, stood up on the concrete slope of the dry drainage canal, and wiped the blood and dirt from her cheek.

Behind her, inside the fenced perimeter of Pacific Iron & Metal, shouting voices and heavy impacts cut through the night air, followed by the cold, definitive click of steel handcuffs.

Sofia didn't look back again.

She hoisted the heavy strap over her shoulder, stepped into the dark shadows of the concrete wash, and began her long, silent walk home through the California night—carrying her bag of metal, her forty-eight dollars, and a secret that would connect her life to the giant man with the serpent watch forever.
