Chapter 7 - THE MAN WITH THE EBONY CANE

The suffocating stillness inside the darkened entryway of Suite 4227 was absolute. The only physical sensation Clare could register was the searing heat of Nicholas’s chest against her shoulder blades and the unyielding iron of his forearm wrapped across her collarbone, holding her pinned against his frame like a living shield.

Through the quarter-inch gap between the mahogany door and the brass frame, the long corridor stretched out like a firing lane.

The man who had stepped from the elevator took two slow, measured strides forward onto the polished gray marble. The illumination from the overhead alabaster sconces washed over his profile, and Clare felt Nicholas’s entire body shudder with a suppressed, lethal tremor.

It was Julian Duca.

Nicholas’s older brother—the current acting head of the Duca enterprise, and the man who had delivered the eulogy at Nicholas’s empty casket two years prior.

Julian was in his late thirties, possessing the same dark wavy hair and sharp cheekbones as Nicholas, but where Nicholas carried the dense, scarred mass of a street-level soldier, Julian was lean, predatory, and impeccably polished. His charcoal-gray three-piece suit was tailored to perfection, his silver-tipped ebony cane clicking with rhythmic, deliberate arrogance against the floorboards.

Behind Julian, two men stepped out from the secondary elevator cab. Both were broad-shouldered, wearing identical dark trench coats over tactical body armor, their right hands buried deep within their outer pockets, keeping their suppressed submachine guns concealed but immediately accessible.

Julian stopped thirty feet from Suite 4227, right beneath the central crystal chandelier of the north wing. He tilted his head back, sniffing the air with mild, theatrical curiosity.

"The smell of fresh paint and cheap soap," Julian mused aloud, his voice smooth, cultured, and chillingly loud in the empty hallway. "The management assured me this entire floor was cleared for the board meeting tonight. Yet... I see a service cart abandoned near the north stairwell."

Inside the suite, Clare’s heart hammered so hard against her ribs she was certain the men in the hallway could hear it. Her housekeeping cart—loaded with linens, extra towels, and cleaning sprays—was parked thirty feet down the hall, right in front of Suite 4217.

Nicholas did not move a single muscle. His left hand slowly drifted down from Clare’s shoulder, his fingers covering her mouth with gentle, absolute firmness. His skin was warm and smelled of gunpowder, his touch sending a silent, undeniable message: breathe through your nose, and do not make a vibration.

Julian took another step, his cane clicking on the stone.

"Check forty-two seventeen," Julian instructed the two men behind him, flicking his fingers dismissively toward the open door of the corner suite down the hall. "If there’s an employee inside, remove her phone and escort her to the basement storage. We don't need witnesses to the transfer."

One of the armed guards nodded once, pulling a short, suppressed automatic pistol from his trench coat, and began walking directly past the doorway of Suite 4227.
