Chapter 5 - THE STRUGGLE FOR SOUND

Dominic saw the violent terror shaking Lucia's small frame. The cold, unyielding armor of the crime boss dissolved instantly, shattered by the raw, desperate need in his daughter's tear-filled eyes.
Without a second thought for his expensive suit or his authoritative stance, Dominic dropped down onto his knees directly on the flour-dusted marble floor.
He brought himself eye-level with the tiny four-year-old girl. His dark, tattooed hands reached out with extreme gentleness, cupping her frail shoulders to steady her trembling body. The anger that had filled his chest seconds ago vanished completely, replaced by a father’s deep, aching love and protective instinct.
For fourteen long months—four hundred and twenty days—Lucia had lived in absolute silence. Physicians, child psychologists, and trauma specialists from across the country had examined her, concluding that the severe emotional shock of seeing her mother murdered had permanently locked her vocal cords in a state of psychological paralysis.
"Baby..." Dominic whispered, his voice cracking with a vulnerability that none of his syndicate captains had ever witnessed. "Baby... what is it? Look at me. Daddy's here."
Lucia gripped the lapels of his suit jacket tighter, her small chest heaving as she swallowed hard, trying frantically to draw air into her lungs. Her mouth opened, her throat working violently as she fought against the invisible wall that had kept her mute for over a year.
In the background, Clara froze mid-step near the pantry door. Rosa covered her mouth with both hands, her eyes wide with tears. Valentina and Mia sat perfectly still on the flour-dusted floor, their eyes locked on their older sister.

The entire kitchen held its breath.
A soft, raspy, painful gasp forced its way up from Lucia’s throat—a raw, strained sound of a child trying to reclaim her voice from the dark.
