Chapter 10 - THE UNSPOKEN LESSON

The morning sun had risen fully over the pine trees, bathing the firing bay in clear, bright daylight. The air was crisp, quiet, and still smelled of burnt powder.

Grace removed her ballistic glasses and pulled her electronic hearing protection down around her neck. Her hair remained neatly tied in her practical ponytail, her expression as calm, composed, and unbothered as it had been sitting on the family porch the evening before.

She stepped away from the rifle bench and walked over to where the two men were standing.

Castellin stepped forward, offering her a sharp, formal bow of his head. "It was an absolute honor to watch you shoot today, Ma'am. Anytime you want this bay, it's yours. On the house."

"Appreciate it, Gunny," Grace replied warmly, offering him a genuine, polite smile. "Thanks for the rifle."

She turned her attention to Brett.

Brett stood awkwardly in his navy polo shirt, his arms glued to his sides, his tactical watch suddenly feeling like an absurd, embarrassing prop. He couldn't meet her eyes for more than a second, his face completely flushed with embarrassment.

He opened his mouth, searching desperately for words—an apology, an excuse, a acknowledgment of his own profound foolishness—but his vocal cords refused to cooperate.

Grace didn't push him. She didn't deliver a smug speech, bring up his comments from the backyard, or rub her extraordinary talent in his face. True mastery never required public validation.

She simply reached out, tapped him gently on the shoulder with a soft, sisterly smile, and spoke in her usual calm, quiet voice.

"You ready to head back for breakfast, Brett?" Grace asked softly. "Jenna said she was making pancakes."

Brett swallowed hard, his throat tight as he managed a single, stiff nod. "Yeah... yeah, Grace. Let's... let's head back."

As they walked side by side toward the gravel parking lot, Brett kept his eyes on the ground, completely humbled by the quiet shadow walking beside him.

He knew that when they sat down at the family dining table that afternoon, and Jenna asked how Grace's "beginner lesson" went, he would smile, keep his mouth shut, and treat his sister-in-law with the profound, unspoken respect she had earned long before she ever stepped onto his range.
